This year, the trip to Japan included attendance of the "Spring Training Camp, Week C" and the special Dan-Grading.
The Spring Training Camp was attended by about 500 university students from all over Japan, as well as a Kenshi from USA and one from Lebanon.
The daily schedule started at 08:30 with Chinkon-Gyo, followed by training and lectures where the kenshis were divided amongst their respective ranks. Although daily training was officially finished at 16:00, where all kenshi gathered and did Samu, everyone gathered again from 17:00 for extra training, where the kenshi would grab a hold of a senior teacher and ask them for instructions on techniques.
The evening training finished everyday about 20:00, this is when the teachers go home to rest, and few students stay behind for extra training and preparation for gradings.
As always, this University Training Camp was another special event for building connections with so many people from all over Japan. The Japanese kenshi were extremely friendly and constructive in helping me develop my techniques. Although the essence of the technique remains the same, it was interesting to see where the focus of each kenshi lies when executing the technique.
Having been away from Hombu for a while and not having a regular training partner, something considered essential in Shorinji Kempo, I made full use of my time there to train as hard and as long as possible with another kenshi who was grading for his fourth Dan as well.
Being at Hombu again this year brought back memories of my first visit in 1997, from which came the inspiration for enrolling at Zenrin Gakuen. The feelings of comradeship and cooperation amongst kenshi are irreplaceable.
Finally, I would like to issue a personal message of appreciation to all the teachers who made extreme effort taking time off from their busy schedules to try to teach me new things, the Zenrin Gakuen students for their cooperation and most of all, my grading partner Nakamura-san, without whom the entire experience would not have had its special flavor… I look forward for more practice during the next possible opportunity. Thank you all for a memorable experience.
